WHAT IS SWIFT®?Swift is a new technology, developed in the UK, which has been licenced for the treatment of all types of verrucae in Podiatry. Swift uses microwave energy which is delivered through a special probe applied to the skin to treat the affected tissue.
It is the most common cause of plantar heel pain and accounts for approximately 11-15% of foot symptoms presenting to physicians. The main clinical symptom is heel pain, particularly in the morning or after a period of rest. Often patients report improvement of pain after walking.
Pain is usually located at the origin of the plantar fascia, i.e., at the medial calcaneal tubercle. Passive dorsiflexion of the toes may aggravate the pain in some patients, particularly in those with chronic PF. Patients suffering from chronic PF may also present with heel pad swelling. A small projectile in the hand piece of the equipment that moves at great speed back and forth hitting a fixed applicator . The kinetic energy formed as a result is converted into a shockwave which is then administered to the injured area.
Side effects from Shock Wave Therapy is limited to:
Yes . It produces a rapid increase in blood circulation to the target area and will break down fibrous scar tissue which build up overtime especially with chronic conditions. Interstitial fascia soft tissue mobilisation technique is primarily used to break up scar tissue in the soft tissue just under your skin. This involves slow motions of gentle force in a targeted area to help release tension and break up scar tissue.
Patients may have some discomfort however the intensity of the kinetic energy (pulses) can be adjusted by the clinician to your comfort levels.
In some cases we may required to use pain score to set the comfort levels. We will together disucss and agree the goal, pain level, interventions required, and follow-up for effective implementation of the realistic pain-management program.
Patients having trust in their health care professional is of paramount importance. Reassurance and confidence results in improved communication which in turn results in greater autonomy and shared decision. Everyone considering private healthcare professional should take interest and ask relevant questions e.g.
What is an Accredited Register? Why should I use a practitioner on an Accredited Register? Check a practitioner in 3 simple steps What is the benefit of an Accredited Practice and role of Regulatory Agencies? It is important that people who work in health and care are trained, skilled and treat patients and service users well. Regulators and accredited registers help to keep you safe by ‘registering’ health and care practitioners - you should check a practitioner’s registration when you: • Pay for private services from a health or care practitioner • Employ a health or care practitioner • Commission services from a health or care practitioner • Have concerns about a practitioner. Our promise - We will always discuss your foot problem and listen to your concerns before thoroughly examining your feet and taking a medical history including any current medication. Together we will agree a treatment plan. It is paramount that you feel confident with both the diagnosis and plan. We acknowledge that some patients may have anxieties, apprehension or fears so no question will seem irrelevant or be ignored, we will seek to answer them clearly and comprehensively. Please do not hesitate to contact us prior to booking an appointment if you are nervous or have any queries. Microwaves have been in clinical use for over 30 years, and are used globally in the effective treatment of cancer...One of the first published papers on the use of microwaves in medicine was in 1986 – where researchers from Japan described a method of treating liver tumours. Those techniques have advanced significantly since then, and Emblation – the company behind Swift, is a key technology supplier to the largest medical device company in the world operating in this space. The same fundamental technology that powers Swift, is also being used in the treatment of lung, liver, kidney and breast cancer in countries all over the world.
Plantar fasciopathy (PF): is an acute or chronic, painful disorder of the plantar fascia that spans between the medial calcaneal tubercle and the proximal phalanges of the toes.
Originally developed for urology, pneumatically generated shock waves were successfully used on bone tissue as early as 1990. Invented by EMS Electro Medical Systems, the Radial Shock Wave therapy was introduced in 1999 under the name “Swiss DolorClast® Method” and became the new standard in extracorporeal shock wave therapy.
What happens during a podiatry appointment for Verruca ....
Comparisons between microwave therapy and other treatments -
Traditionally verrucae treatment can be a long drawn out process.
Advantages of using Swift - User Experiences...
It is not uncommon for patients to feel a sharp sensation, similar to an injection, but unlike most treatments for verruca, pain felt during the treatment quickly subsides. You should feel little to no pain from the verruca at this stage, and your normal skin should be returning where the verruca was. |
